How to Make Wuḍūʾ (Ablution) – Hanafi

Faraʾiḍ (Obligatory) in Hanafi: (1) Wash face once; (2) Wash both arms including elbows once; (3) Wipe at least one-quarter of head; (4) Wash both feet including ankles once.

Complete Sunnah Method

  1. Niyyah (intention) and “Bismillāh”.
  2. Wash hands up to wrists 3×.
  3. Rinse mouth 3× (use miswāk if available).
  4. Rinse nose 3× (gently inhale, then expel).
  5. Wash face hairline-to-chin, ear-to-ear 3×.
  6. Wash right arm then left up to and including elbows 3×.
  7. Masḥ: wipe at least ¼ of head once (sunnah: whole head).
  8. Wipe inner then outer ears once.
  9. Wash right foot then left including ankles 3×; rub between toes.
  10. Conclude with the duʿāʾ after wuḍūʾ if memorized.

What Breaks Wuḍūʾ

Note: Light dozing while seated with hips firmly down does not break wuḍūʾ.

Tayammum (Dry Ablution) – Brief

  1. Make niyyah; say “Bismillāh”.
  2. Strike clean earth/dust with both hands; wipe face fully.
  3. Strike again; wipe arms including elbows.

Valid when water is unavailable or harmful (illness, etc.). Ask a scholar for specific scenarios.
