How to Perform Ḥajj – Hanafi

ISEB Contact Chat

Pillars & Obligations (Summary)

8 Dhū al-Ḥijjah (Yawm at-Tarwiyah)

  • Enter ihrām (if doing Ḥajj al-Tamattuʿ, re-enter ihrām for Ḥajj).
  • Go to Minā; pray Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, Maghrib, ʿIshāʾ and Fajr of next day (shortening 4-rakʿah prayers).

9 Dhū al-Ḥijjah (ʿArafah → Muzdalifah)

  • After sunrise, depart to ʿArafah. Wuquf (standing) from Ẓuhr until sunset – the heart of Ḥajj.
  • After Maghrib (without praying it in ʿArafah), move to Muzdalifah; pray Maghrib & ʿIshāʾ combined, stay overnight.
  • Collect pebbles (7+21 for the next days).

10 Dhū al-Ḥijjah (Yawm an-Naḥr)

  • Stone Jamrat al-ʿAqabah (7 pebbles).
  • Offer Qurbānī (if required by your Ḥajj type).
  • Ḥalq/taqṣīr (men shave preferred; women trim fingertip length).
  • Change into normal clothes; proceed to Makkah for Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah + Saʿy (if not done earlier).
  • Return to Minā for the nights.

11–12 (optionally 13) Dhū al-Ḥijjah

  • Each day after Ẓuhr: Stone all 3 jamarāt (7 each, total 21 per day) in order: Ṣughrā → Wusṭā → ʿAqabah.
  • Remain in Minā nights (wājib). On day 12 you may leave before sunset; otherwise stay to 13 and repeat stoning.

Farewell Ṭawāf

Before leaving Makkah, non-residents perform Ṭawāf al-Wadāʿ (Farewell ṭawāf). This is wājib in Hanafi fiqh.
