How to Perform ʿUmrah – Hanafi

ISEB Contact Chat

Overview

ʿUmrah consists of ihrām, ṭawāf (7 circuits), two rakʿahs, saʿy between Ṣafā-Marwah (7 laps), then ḥalq/taqṣīr (shave/trim).

Step-by-Step

  1. Miqat & Ihrām: Before crossing miqāt, perform ghusl, men wear two white cloths (women wear normal modest clothing). Make niyyah for ʿUmrah and recite Talbiyah:
“Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk, inna-l-ḥamda wan-niʿmata laka wal-mulk, lā sharīka lak.”
  2. Enter Masjid al-Ḥarām: Right foot first; say the masjid duʿāʾ.
  3. Ṭawāf (7 circuits): Begin at al-Ḥajar al-Aswad; keep Kaʿbah to your left; proceed counter-clockwise 7 times. For men: idṭibāʿ and raml (first 3 circuits) if not overly crowded.
  4. Two Rakʿahs: After ṭawāf, pray 2 rakʿahs behind Maqām Ibrāhīm (or anywhere available).
  5. Saʿy (Ṣafā → Marwah): 7 laps starting at Ṣafā; walk briskly between green markers (men). Recite duʿāʾ and dhikr throughout.
  6. Ḥalq/Taqṣīr: Men: shave (preferable) or trim all around; Women: trim a fingertip’s length from the end of their hair.
  7. Exit Ihrām: Ihrām ends after hair is cut. ʿUmrah complete.
Notes: Avoid prohibited actions in ihrām (fragrance, nail/hair cutting, marital relations, hunting, etc.). Women do not perform idṭibāʿ or raml.

Suggested Duʿāʾ & Dhikr

At ṭawāf start: “Bismillāhi Allāhu Akbar” (upon facing the Black Stone, if possible).

Between Rukn Yamānī and Ḥajar: “Rabbanā ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanah wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanah wa qinā ʿadhāban-nār.”
